Diesel testing isn’t a plug-in-and-go OBD-II check like a gasoline smog test, so most shops can’t run it, and showing up at the wrong location wastes a trip you don’t have time for. At our E Sahara Ave corporate location, a certified technician puts your eligible diesel pickup or Sprinter van on a dynamometer, measures smoke opacity, and visually checks its emissions components. Results are submitted electronically to the Nevada DMV when your test is complete.

Drive up to E Sahara Ave today, we’re open Monday through Saturday.

Why Las Vegas Chooses Smog Busters for Diesel Smog Testing

The Only Dynamometer Test in Our Network

Diesel exhaust doesn’t work like gasoline exhaust, and a standard OBD-II scan can’t measure it. Our E Sahara Ave location uses a dynamometer to measure smoke opacity and visually checks the emissions components your eligible diesel truck or van needs tested.

Certified Technicians Who Know Diesel

A tech unfamiliar with smoke opacity testing can misread the results or slow down your visit. Ours are trained specifically on diesel emissions procedures, so your test is handled correctly from the start.

No Appointment, No Wasted Trip

You don’t need to book a testing slot. Eligible RWD or 2WD vehicles can drive up during business hours. Selectable AWD or 4WD must be switched into RWD or 2WD. We cannot test full-time AWD vehicles that stay in AWD.

What a Diesel Smog Test Is

Heavy-duty diesel truck pulled up at the Smog Busters E Sahara corporate hut for a diesel smog test

A diesel smog test checks how clean your diesel engine burns fuel, but it works differently from a gasoline smog check. There is no standard OBD-II computer scan. At the E Sahara corporate hut, an eligible vehicle goes on a dynamometer while a certified diesel technician measures exhaust smoke opacity and visually inspects the required emissions components.

During the test, an opacity meter reads the exhaust and measures how much light is blocked by the smoke coming from the tailpipe. The technician compares the reading with Nevada’s limit and records the pass or fail result.

This light-duty diesel test requires specialized equipment that most smog shops do not have. That is why Smog Busters diesel testing is limited to our certified E Sahara location with its dynamometer.

Which Diesel Vehicles Need Testing

Not every diesel vehicle needs a smog test. Nevada requires diesel emissions testing for vehicles that meet all of these conditions:

  • Diesel-powered engine. Gasoline vehicles go through a completely different test process at any of the 32 Smog Busters locations.
  • Gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 14,000 lbs or less. This covers most diesel pickups like the Ford F-250, Ram 2500/3500, Chevy Silverado 2500/3500, and Mercedes Sprinter vans. Vehicles over 14,000 lbs GVWR are exempt from station testing, though they are still subject to roadside enforcement.
  • Drivetrain compatible with the dynamometer. E Sahara can test RWD or 2WD vehicles and selectable AWD or 4WD vehicles switched into RWD or 2WD. It cannot test full-time AWD vehicles that stay in AWD.
  • Registered in Clark County or Washoe County. If your vehicle is registered in a rural Nevada county, it is exempt from emissions testing.
  • Model year 1968 or newer. Vehicles older than model year 1968 are exempt.
New vehicle exemption: Brand-new diesel vehicles are exempt from emissions testing until their 4th registration. So if you just bought a new diesel pickup from a dealer, you will not need a smog test for the first few years.

How the Diesel Smog Test Works

Here is what happens when you pull into the E Sahara location for a diesel smog test:

  • Check-in. A technician verifies your registration and vehicle information. The vehicle must be present for the test.
  • Dynamometer setup. Your diesel pickup or Sprinter van is positioned on the dynamometer. This is a roller system that lets the drive wheels spin while the vehicle stays in place.
  • Warm-up. The engine needs to be at operating temperature. If you drove to us, it is probably already warmed up. If not, the tech will idle it until it reaches the right range.
  • Opacity test. The technician runs the required dynamometer procedure while the opacity meter reads the exhaust.
  • Opacity reading. Nevada sets the maximum allowed smoke-opacity level. The technician records whether the vehicle passes or fails.
  • Results. You get your pass or fail result on the spot. A passing result is valid for 90 days, or 180 days if the vehicle was purchased from a Nevada dealer.

The entire process typically takes 15 to 30 minutes depending on the vehicle and whether it needs warm-up time.

What to Bring

Have these ready before you head to E Sahara:

  • Your diesel vehicle. The vehicle must be physically present for the test. Unlike some DMV paperwork, a diesel smog test cannot be done without the vehicle on the dynamometer.
  • Current Nevada registration. This confirms the vehicle is registered in Clark or Washoe County and shows whether the smog is due.
  • Photo ID. Photo ID.
  • Payment. Call us for current diesel smog test pricing.
Heads up: If your check engine light is on, your vehicle will not pass the smog test. Get the light diagnosed and repaired before you come in. The E Sahara location also has 2G certified repair technicians who can help if you need diagnosis or repair.

Diesel vs Gasoline Smog Testing

Diesel owners sometimes wonder why they cannot just go to any smog shop. The reason is that diesel and gasoline emissions testing are completely different procedures that require different equipment, different certifications, and different training.

  • Gasoline test: Uses an OBD-II scanner to read the vehicle’s onboard computer. Checks engine codes, monitors, and readiness. Available at all 32 Smog Busters locations. Takes about 10 minutes.
  • Diesel test: Uses a dynamometer and opacity meter. No computer scan. Physical measurement of exhaust smoke density under load. Only available at E Sahara. Takes 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Gasoline certification: 1G (inspection) or 2G (inspection + repair). Most smog shops hold at least a 1G.
  • Diesel certification: D rating. Requires specialized training and equipment. Very few stations in the valley hold this rating.

Bottom line: if your vehicle runs on diesel, you need a station with a D rating and a dynamometer. The E Sahara location has both.

Why E Sahara for Your Diesel Smog Test

The corporate location at 2711 E Sahara Ave is the only Smog Busters hut certified for diesel emissions testing. It holds a D rating for diesel inspections and a 2G rating for gasoline emissions repair. That combination is rare in the Las Vegas valley.
