Start With Your Nevada Renewal Notice
Your renewal notice tells you whether the Nevada DMV expects an emissions test for that registration. Read it before you plan the trip.
Nevada requires a yearly test for many light-duty diesel vehicles in the covered parts of Clark and Washoe County. The vehicle must meet the state's age and weight rules. New vehicles have a test break for their first three registrations.
Do not guess from last year's visit. A sale, move, or exemption can change the next step. Follow the notice for the current registration.
The notice may use the words emissions test or smog check. For a diesel vehicle in Las Vegas, the test must be done at a station with diesel equipment.

Find the Maker's GVWR
Nevada uses the maker's gross vehicle weight rating to place a diesel in the right test group. The short name is GVWR.
The yearly station test applies to an otherwise eligible diesel with a GVWR of 14,000 pounds or less. A vehicle rated at 14,001 pounds or more is outside that station test program.
Look for the maker's label near the driver's door. It may sit on the hinge pillar, door-latch post, or door edge. Find the line marked GVWR.
Do not use the truck's weight on a scale that day. Do not use payload, tow rating, or gross combined weight rating. Those numbers answer a different question.
A model badge is not enough. A pickup or van family can include more than one GVWR. Read the label on the vehicle that will be tested.
If the label is gone or hard to read, use a maker source or the Nevada DMV to confirm the rating. Do not pick a number from a general sales page.

Check the Model Year and Home Area
Nevada's light-duty diesel rule covers model year 1968 and newer. Older diesel vehicles are exempt from this station program.
The rule also depends on where the vehicle is based. It covers the test areas in Clark and Washoe County. A Las Vegas renewal notice will show when the test applies.
New vehicles do not need the test for their first three registrations. The fourth registration starts the test rule when the other facts apply.
A 2020 diesel can still fall outside the station program if its GVWR is over the limit. A light pickup can still be exempt during its first registrations. Read the notice and the maker's label together.

Make Sure the Drive Mode Fits E Sahara & Atlantic
The dynamometer turns the drive wheels on rollers. The vehicle's drive mode must work with that setup.
E Sahara & Atlantic can test RWD and 2WD diesel vehicles. It can also test selectable AWD or 4WD. A switch or setting must change it into RWD or 2WD.
The station cannot test full-time AWD that cannot switch out of AWD. It cannot test that drivetrain, so it cannot give the vehicle a pass or fail result.
Check the owner's manual and the controls in the cab. Look for a clear two-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive setting. Do not assume that every AWD or 4WD system works the same way.
Some systems change modes with a knob. Others use a button or menu. The control must put the vehicle into the right drive mode for the test. A label that says AWD alone does not show whether the change is possible.
Do not alter the drive system. Use only the mode that the maker built into the vehicle.

Check the Fuel Cap
Nevada includes the fuel cap in the light-duty diesel inspection. Make sure the cap is present. It should close as the maker designed.
Use the right cap for the vehicle. A loose fit or the wrong part may not work as required.
If the cap is the only failed item, replace it with the right cap. Take the failed report to an approved diesel station or a DMV Emission Control Lab for signoff.
It is easier to look at the cap before the test. This does not require a guess about the engine or exhaust.
Do not treat a new cap as a fix for smoke or an emissions part. It addresses the cap only.

Bring the Engine to Its Normal Temperature
Nevada's diesel test calls for the vehicle to be at its normal operating temperature before the opacity check. Drive it in the normal way and follow the maker's directions. Do not use hard runs, forced regeneration, or another trick just to change a test result.

Leave the Factory Emissions System in Place
The inspector looks at the emissions parts. They must be present and able to do their job.
Do not remove, unplug, or change a factory emissions part. Nevada includes a visual check. Federal law also bans defeat parts.
If a prior owner changed the system, have a trained repair shop inspect it. The legal repair path puts the proper parts and function back in place.
Avoid any method meant to hide smoke for one test. The state measures the vehicle under load. A short-term trick does not repair the cause and may create more harm.
Use normal service based on the owner's manual. If the vehicle needs repair, let a trained diesel tech test it and name the fault.

Do Not Rely on a Dash-Light Guess
A light on the dash can point to many types of faults. This guide does not claim that a diesel will pass or fail based on one light.
Nevada's public diesel guide describes the opacity test and the visual check. It does not state an automatic diesel result for the check-engine light.
Have a trained tech inspect any fault that affects how the vehicle runs. Do not clear a warning and treat the cleared display as a repair. The vehicle still needs its normal systems to work as designed.
The state test result comes from the inspection at the station. A dashboard guess cannot replace that result.

Know What the Test Will Check
The diesel test uses a dynamometer and an opacity meter. The dynamometer holds the drive wheels at a steady set speed and load. The opacity meter checks how much light the exhaust smoke blocks.
The inspector also looks at the emissions parts and fuel cap. The test covers both the smoke reading and the visible equipment.
The state sets the test method and pass level. A shop cannot promise the result before it measures the vehicle.
Your best preparation is simple. Bring the vehicle in its normal, legal form. Use the right station. Know the weight class and drive mode.

If the Vehicle Fails
Keep the test report. It shows which part did not pass.
Take the report to a trained diesel repair tech. The tech can inspect the vehicle and find the cause. Do not replace parts based on a general web list.
After the repair, the vehicle needs another state test. The station measures it again. A repair receipt does not set the result.
Nevada has a limited waiver path for some vehicles that fail after repair. The Nevada DMV decides. A vehicle that failed because of missing or changed emissions parts cannot use that waiver path.
