Once the DMV processes the transfer, they mail the new title directly to your address on file.
What a Title Transfer in Las Vegas Involves

A title transfer in Las Vegas moves legal ownership of a vehicle from one person to another. The vehicle title is a legal document that proves who owns the car. When you buy a vehicle from a private seller, receive one as a gift, or inherit one, the title has to be transferred into your name before you can register and drive it.
The process is simple. The seller signs the title over to you before you come in. You bring the signed title to any Smog Busters hut, and we file the transfer through the Nevada DMV’s system. You do not need to go to a DMV office. The seller does not need to come with you.
Smog Busters is an authorized third-party DMV services provider. We submit the same paperwork the DMV does, through the same state system. The difference is you walk in and out in about 20 minutes instead of spending half a day at a state DMV office.
When You Need a Title Transfer
- Buying a car from a private seller. The most common reason. The seller signs the title, you bring it to us, and we file the ownership change with the DMV.
- Receiving a vehicle as a gift. Same process. The person giving the vehicle signs the title over to you. Gift transfers may have different DMV fee structures.
- Inheriting a vehicle. If a family member passes away and leaves you a vehicle, the title needs to transfer into your name. Additional documents may be required depending on the situation.
- Adding or removing someone from a title. Getting married, divorced, or restructuring vehicle ownership? A title transfer handles the name change.
- Buying from a dealership that did not complete the transfer. Some smaller dealers leave the title transfer to the buyer. If you have a signed title from a dealer, bring it in.
What to Bring
Have these ready before you head to the hut:
- The signed vehicle title. The seller must sign the title before you come in. The seller does not need to be present at the hut.
- Your Nevada driver’s license or state ID. Photo ID is required for all DMV transactions.
- Proof of Nevada auto insurance. The vehicle must be insured under a Nevada policy. Out-of-state insurance is not accepted.
- Odometer disclosure. Required for vehicles less than 10 years old. This is usually printed on the title itself.
- Payment for DMV fees and our service fee. Call us for a current quote.
How It Works at the Hut

Pull up to any Smog Busters hut during business hours. Here is the step-by-step:
- Document check (a couple of minutes). We review the signed title, your ID, insurance, and any additional paperwork to make sure everything is complete.
- Paperwork (about 20 minutes). We fill out the title transfer forms, confirm vehicle and buyer information, and collect the fees.
- Smog check (if needed). Most vehicles require a passing smog check before the title can transfer. We run it on-site during the same visit.
- Submission. We submit your title transfer to the Nevada DMV through our authorized agent channel.
- Title delivery. The DMV processes the transfer in 7 to 10 business days. Once approved, they mail the new title directly to the address you have on file with the DMV.
Title Transfer vs Duplicate Title
These are two different services, and people sometimes mix them up. Here is the difference:
- Title transfer changes who owns the vehicle. The current owner signs the title over to a new owner, and we file the change with the DMV.
- Duplicate title replaces a lost, stolen, or damaged title document. The ownership does not change. You are just getting a new copy of the paper. If you lost your title and need to sell, you would get a duplicate title first, then sell the vehicle with the replacement.
- Salvage title is a different situation entirely. If a vehicle was declared a total loss by an insurance company, it has a salvage title and requires a VIN inspection and rebuilt title process before it can be driven on public roads.
