What a Salvage Title Is

A salvage title means your insurance company looked at your vehicle after a serious accident, flood, theft recovery, or other major damage and decided it wasn’t worth fixing, so they declared it a total loss. Either they paid out your claim and took ownership, or you kept the vehicle and the state branded the title “salvage.”

Here’s the catch: you can’t register or drive a salvage-titled vehicle on Nevada roads. It stays parked until you get it repaired, inspected, and the DMV issues a new title branded “rebuilt.” Once the DMV issues the rebuilt title and the vehicle is properly registered and insured, you can legally drive it again.

That rebuilt branding stays with the car for life, so any future buyer will know it was once totaled and brought back. That’s exactly why a lot of Las Vegas drivers seek these vehicles out on purpose, you can often get the same year and model for a fraction of what a clean-title version costs. Do the repairs right, pass your inspection, and you’ve got yourself a legal, drivable vehicle without the clean-title price tag.

The Salvage-to-Rebuilt Title Process

1. Check if you need DMV approval first. If your vehicle is five model years old or newer, Nevada DMV has to inspect and sign off on the rebuild before you touch it with a wrench.
2. Do the repairs, and hang onto everything. Every receipt, every parts invoice, every work order. You’ll need proof of what was fixed when it’s time for inspection.
3. Bring it to us. Tow or trailer the repaired vehicle to 2711 E Sahara Ave. We’ll run the safety inspection and fill out Part I of Form VP-64.
4. Fill out your part. That’s Part II. You’ll need a notary or a Nevada DMV rep to verify your signature on it.
5. Wrap it up at the DMV. Tow or trailer the vehicle to a DMV inspection station with your title, repair records, and the VP-64 in hand. They’ll inspect it, complete Part III, and once everything else checks out, issue your rebuilt title. One thing worth repeating: don’t drive it on public roads until the DMV issues the rebuilt title and the vehicle is registered and insured.

What to Bring

Bring these items to the safety inspection:

• The salvage title. The physical title document showing the salvage brand. Must be in your name or accompanied by a signed title transfer.
• Proof of all repairs. Receipts, invoices, and parts records for every repair made to the vehicle. Include both parts and labor documentation.
• Your Nevada driver’s license or state-issued photo ID. Required for all DMV transactions.
• Proof of Nevada insurance. The vehicle must be insured in Nevada before the rebuilt title can be issued.

Getting Your DMV VIN Inspection

Here’s an important distinction: the actual VIN inspection for your salvage title is done by the Nevada DMV, not by us. It’s a legal requirement specific to salvage-branded vehicles, an extra check the state runs before it’ll issue you a rebuilt title.

At that inspection, a DMV representative verifies the VIN, reviews the vehicle and repair information, and completes Part III of Form VP-64. The vehicle itself has to be physically present, so arrange to have it towed or trailered to the DMV inspection station. Before that appointment, we complete the safety inspection and Part I, so your documentation is ready.

Can I Drive a Salvage-Titled Vehicle?

No. A vehicle with a salvage title can’t legally be driven on public roads in Nevada. It isn’t registered, and driving it can create legal and insurance problems.

Have your repaired vehicle towed or trailered to Smog Busters for the safety check. Once we complete Part I of Form VP-64 and you complete Part II, have the vehicle towed or trailered to a Nevada DMV inspection station for the VIN inspection and final submission.

We get it, if the car is running fine, it’s tempting to drive it yourself. But a vehicle with a salvage title cannot be operated on public streets. You’re this close to the finish line, so don’t risk it. Arrange a tow or trailer instead.
