What Should You Bring to the Safety Inspection?

Bring the repaired car and its salvage title. Check the VIN on the title before your visit. It should match the VIN shown on the car.

You should also bring:

Repair records and receipts for replacement parts
Your Nevada driver’s license or photo ID
Form VP-209 if the car needed approval before repairs began

Nevada requires Form VP-209 before repairs begin on cars five model years old or newer. If that rule may apply, call us before your visit.

Keep the receipts organized by repair or part. Each receipt should show what you bought and where the part came from. Complete records make it easier to review the work and finish Form VP-64.

What Happens During the Smog Busters Safety Inspection?

We begin by listing the car’s year, make, model, type, and VIN. Those details must agree with the title and Form VP-64.

Next, we inspect the repairs and the gear needed for safe road use. Form VP-64 includes items such as:

Glass, mirrors, and windshield wipers
Steering, frame, and brakes
Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals
Airbags and safety belts
Horn, muffler, and emergency brake

Every item that applies to the car must pass. We then sign Part I of the Certificate of Inspection and Affidavit of Vehicle Construction. Our signature confirms that the car meets Nevada’s safety rules.

What Forms Must the Vehicle Owner Complete?

Part II of Form VP-64 belongs to the car owner. You fill it out after the garage has finished Part I.

The owner section asks for:

The parts and materials used during the rebuild
The car’s year, make, model, type, and axle count
Your full legal name and Nevada ID information
Your phone number and addresses
Your signature

A Nevada DMV agent or notary must verify your signature. The form needs original signatures, so copies are not accepted. Do not make changes after a notary signs the form.

We fill out the garage section and show you what remains. You then bring the car and paperwork to the DMV. That packet includes Form VP-64, the salvage title, and your repair records.

What Happens at the Nevada DMV VIN Inspection?

After our safety check, bring the car and packet to a Nevada DMV inspection station. The car must be present for this step.

A DMV agent checks the VIN and reviews the repair records. The agent then fills out Part III of Form VP-64. You turn in the title and all other required paperwork at the DMV.

After the DMV approves the car and papers, you can apply for a Nevada rebuilt title and registration. The title will carry the “Rebuilt” mark from that point forward.
