Start With the Correct Nevada Title Process

The phrase “salvage title process” covers two different jobs. One creates the first salvage title after a vehicle gets totaled. The other moves a vehicle from a salvage title toward a rebuilt title.

The steps below apply to the second job. Your vehicle already has a salvage title, and you want to meet Nevada’s rebuilt-title requirements.

Read your document before paying for repairs or booking the safety inspection. If it says “Non-Repairable,” these steps do not apply. Call the Nevada DMV if you are unsure which document you have.

Before Repairs

Step 1: Check Whether the DMV Must Approve Repairs First

Check the vehicle’s model year before starting any repairs. Nevada requires DMV restoration approval for a salvage vehicle that is five model years old or newer.

An authorized DMV representative inspects the vehicle and completes Form VP-209. The signed form approves the restoration work before the first repair begins.

Before you start: Don’t take the car apart until DMV approval is done.

Ask the DMV which ownership documents and ID you need to bring. Keep the original VP-209 because you will need it during later inspections.

If repairs began without VP-209, stop and contact the DMV before doing more work. Form VP-64 includes a place for a DMV representative to record approval after the fact. The DMV decides whether that option applies to your vehicle.

Repair Records

Step 2: Repair the Vehicle and Save the Records

After receiving any required DMV approval, finish the repairs before booking the safety inspection. Form VP-64 requires the vehicle to be mechanically safe and equipped for highway use. Our inspector can sign Part I only after each required item passes.

Create one file for the vehicle while you work:

• Form VP-209, if the DMV required it
• The salvage title
• Receipts for parts and materials
• Repair invoices and work records
• Any other forms the DMV gave you

Keep the small parts receipts. The DMV uses these records to see how you rebuilt the vehicle and where its parts came from. For a major part from another vehicle, keep the purchase document that identifies its source.

Before your visit, compare the salvage title’s VIN with the VIN on the car. A mismatch can stop the paperwork. Contact the DMV about any title or VIN issue before scheduling the safety inspection.

Part I of Form VP-64

Step 3: Bring the Vehicle to Smog Busters for the Safety Inspection

The repaired vehicle must be present for its safety inspection. Bring it to our E Sahara location in Las Vegas. No other Smog Busters location performs salvage-title safety inspections.

During your visit:

1. We review the salvage title and the forms you brought.
2. We match the vehicle information and VIN against the paperwork.
3. We inspect the safety items listed in Part I of Form VP-64.
4. We record the result for each item that applies to your vehicle.
5. We sign Part I after every required item passes.

The inspection covers brakes, steering, frame, lights, mirrors, horn, wipers, safety belts, and airbags. We mark an item not applicable only when Form VP-64 allows it.

If a required item fails, we can’t sign Part I. You must fix that item before the vehicle can pass.

We finish our part by completing the garage section of VP-64. You complete the owner section, then take the vehicle and packet to the DMV. A DMV representative performs the next inspection and completes Part III.

Part II of Form VP-64

Step 4: Complete the Owner Section of Form VP-64

After we sign Part I, you complete Part II. This section contains your sworn statement about the vehicle and how you rebuilt it.

Part II asks you to identify whether the vehicle was:

• Built with parts or materials you already had
• Built with purchased parts or materials
• Assembled from a manufactured kit
• Purchased as-is from a rebuilder

Use your full legal name as shown on your driver’s license or ID. You also enter the vehicle details, contact information, and your physical and mailing addresses. Attach receipts for purchased parts.

A notary or authorized Nevada DMV representative must verify your signature. Follow that person’s instructions before signing. Form VP-64 requires original signatures and does not allow changes after notarization.

Keep both pages together for your DMV visit.

Part III of Form VP-64

Step 5: Take the Vehicle and Packet to the Nevada DMV

After completing Parts I and II, take the vehicle and paperwork to a Nevada DMV inspection station. The DMV representative needs the vehicle there to complete Part III.

Bring:

• Both original pages of Form VP-64
• The records you gathered in Step 2
• Any other documents the DMV requested
• The vehicle itself

The DMV representative verifies the VIN shown in Part I. The inspection may also cover vehicle details, the odometer, title documents, and records for parts from other vehicles. The representative then completes and signs Part III.

The DMV controls the review. Missing or conflicting information may require another document or a correction. Keep each original form and receipt until the DMV settles the transaction.

Final DMV Review

Step 6: Finish the Rebuilt Title and Registration Process

After the DMV accepts your inspection packet, its staff explains the remaining title and registration steps. The DMV controls approval, fees, and processing time.

If approved, the DMV issues a Nevada title marked “Rebuilt.” That mark stays with the car and shows future owners that it once carried a salvage title. The DMV also decides when the vehicle meets its registration requirements.

Smog Busters can’t approve the rebuilt title or guarantee a DMV processing date. Our job is inspecting the repaired vehicle and completing the garage section correctly.
