How the Nevada Emissions Test Works
Nevada requires emissions testing for many vehicles registered in Clark County. The test is designed to measure whether your vehicle’s engine and exhaust systems are operating within the environmental standards set by the state.
At this station, qualifying vehicles go through one or both of the standard test methods used in Nevada:
OBD II Scan
For model year 1996 and newer qualifying vehicles, the technician connects to your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic port. The system checks for stored trouble codes and confirms that your vehicle’s emission-related readiness monitors have run and are ready. If your check engine light is on, your OBD II monitors may not be set to ready, which could affect the result.
Tailpipe Test
Older vehicles that do not have an OBD II port go through a tailpipe measurement. The equipment reads the levels of hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, and other emissions from your exhaust. Your vehicle needs to be at normal operating temperature for this test.
What Happens If Your Vehicle Does Not Pass
If your vehicle does not pass, you will receive the test result information so you know what needs attention next. This is a testing-only station, so smog diagnosis and repair are not available here.
Some Smog Busters locations can help with smog-related diagnosis and repair. Call (702) 436-5346 and we can direct you to the right location for your situation.
Nevada has a repair assistance program for qualifying low-income vehicle owners who have failed an emissions test. Ask the team or call ahead for details on how this works.
