Getting around without a placard turns a quick errand into a painful one. If mobility makes it hard to walk from a regular parking spot, a Nevada handicap placard can make daily trips easier. You’ll just need your doctor to complete the medical section of the SP-27 form first. Bring that filled-out form and a photo ID to any of our 32 locations, or call (702) 436-5346 if you have questions about the paperwork before you come in. We’ll help you file it with the Nevada DMV.

Nevada Handicap Placards in Plain Terms

A Nevada handicap placard lets the person it’s issued to use disabled parking spaces. Your medical provider signs off on the SP-27’s medical section, you fill out and sign your part, and we help get the paperwork filed.
There are three types, and your medical provider decides which one fits your condition. Temporary placards are red and good for up to 6 months. Moderate placards are blue and last up to 2 years. Permanent placards are also blue, but they’re good for 10 years.
Disability plates are a different route, not a hanging placard. They require a permanent disability along with your vehicle’s paperwork. Ask our team and we’ll walk you through what’s needed and the DMV steps for a first plate.
What You Need to File for a Handicap Placard in Nevada
Bring a completed SP-27 form and your photo ID. For a first form, the medical section must be signed by a medical provider listed on SP-27.
- Completed SP-27. A medical provider listed on SP-27 must sign the medical section. You sign your section of the form. Pick up a form at a Smog Busters shop if you need one.
- Your photo ID. Bring your Nevada driver license or state ID. It helps verify the applicant.
- Your registration, if it applies. Bring it for vehicle plate work. A hanging placard is assigned to the person.
- Payment. DMV does not charge for the placard itself. We charge for filing help. Call (702) 436-5346 for a current quote. We accept cash, cards, and Tap to Pay. Checks cover DMV fees only. Make checks payable to the Nevada DMV.

Permanent vs Temporary Placard
Your medical provider states the type on SP-27. It may be temporary, moderate, or permanent.
- Permanent placard. Current permanent placards are blue. They have a 10-year term. Check the expiration date on your placard.
- Temporary placard. Red placards last up to 6 months. Moderate blue placards last up to 2 years. The signed SP-27 states how long the condition is expected to last.
- Disability plates. These stay with a vehicle and require a permanent disability. First plate forms have separate state DMV steps. Ask our team about the papers.
Renewing or Replacing a Placard
Permanent placards last 10 years, and when it’s about to expire, the DMV mails you a renewal notice, no new medical signature needed this time. Just bring the notice and your ID, and we’ll help with the paperwork.
Lost or damaged your placard? We can help replace it. Bring your ID and whatever placard records you have, and we’ll check what’s on file and walk you through what’s needed.
Temporary and moderate placards work differently. Once those expire, you’ll need a new form with a fresh medical signature. If you still need a placard, bring in the signed SP-27 and we’ll take it from there.
