Do Las Vegas DMV offices accept walk-ins?

The Nevada DMV does not take open walk-ins for most visits. You will need an appointment for most work at a state office.

The main exceptions are:

• License plate drop-off.
• Past-due debt payments.
• VIN inspections at certain offices.
• Limited document drop-off for an approved case.

The state can change these rules. A walk-in visit for one task does not mean the office can finish other work for you.

Why Rules Changed

Why did Nevada DMV change its walk-in rules?

Nevada DMV began limiting walk-ins at its large offices in August 2022. The agency faced heavy demand and ongoing staff shortages. On a busy day, almost 1,000 people came to each large office.

There were often more customers than open service windows. Once the line grew too long, staff had to stop taking walk-ins so they could finish before closing. Some people waited for hours and still had to return another day.

Appointments gave each office more control over its daily work. Staff could match the number of visits to the desks and workers on duty. When the change began, Nevada also added thousands of weekly appointment times at its Las Vegas and Henderson offices.

An open walk-in line has no firm limit. A booked schedule caps the number of people who can arrive that day.

Crowd safety became a concern as well. In July 2024, the DMV paused open Wednesday walk-ins at its metro offices during extreme summer heat. Customers had lined up outside hours before the doors opened. On some mornings, Las Vegas was above 100 degrees before 8 a.m.

The heat pause was a short-term step. Large offices had begun limiting walk-ins two years earlier because of staff shortages, heavy demand, and long lines.

Shorter Waits

How can appointments shorten office waits?

Appointments spread visits through the day. Staff know how many people are scheduled to arrive and can keep the waiting room and outdoor lines from growing too large.

A booked time does not promise that your visit will start at that exact minute. A hard case or missing papers can cause delays. The system aims to create a steady line and give staff a better chance to finish each visit that day.

You get a set day and time instead of joining a line with no clear end. For an eligible vehicle transaction, you may also visit a participating Smog Busters location. Many take walk-ins for common vehicle services.

Walk-In Exceptions

Which DMV tasks still allow a walk-in?

The Nevada DMV lists four main exceptions to its appointment rule.

Can you drop off license plates without an appointment?

You may drop off Nevada plates without an appointment. You may need to surrender them after you sell a car, cancel its registration, or move the car out of Nevada.

This visit covers the plates only. The office will not finish other work at the same time. Most added services still need an appointment.

Can you make a past-due debt payment without an appointment?

The DMV takes walk-ins for past-due debt payments. The exception covers the payment. You may still need an appointment for any other service.

Can you get a VIN inspection without an appointment?

A vehicle identification number is often called a VIN. An inspection checks that the number on the vehicle matches its papers. Nevada DMV offers walk-in VIN inspections at its Las Vegas-area metro offices. The check alone does not finish a registration or title transaction.

Smog Busters performs a VIN inspection only as part of an eligible full DMV transaction. We do not offer stand-alone VIN inspections.

Can you drop off documents tied to an approved case?

The state may approve a document drop-off for a case already in progress. The visit covers only the papers the state asked for. It is not a general walk-in appointment.

Wait for written instructions before bringing original papers. Do not leave a title unless the state asks for it.

Wednesday Appointments

Are last-minute Wednesday slots walk-ins?

No. A last-minute Wednesday slot is still an appointment.

The state may release a small number of these times. You must book one before you arrive, so bring proof of the appointment. The office may turn you away without it.

Many locations take walk-ins for services such as:

Bring every document tied to the transaction. A missing title, ID, or lien release can stop the work.

Some jobs have firm limits. Smog Busters handles salvage and rebuilt title work only at its East Sahara location. After a title case is complete, the state mails the physical Nevada title to you. It can take about six weeks to arrive.

Smog Busters does not issue driver licenses, ID cards, or Real ID cards. We do not give written or driving tests.

Bring These Papers

What should you bring for vehicle paperwork?

Bring a photo ID and all papers tied to your transaction. You may need a title, registration card, renewal notice, bill of sale, or proof of insurance.

Leave the title unsigned if you do not know where to sign. A mark in the wrong box can delay a transfer.

The person named on the papers may need to come with you. Some jobs also need the vehicle. Complete any required smog test before a registration renewal.
