License Plate Replacement Nevada: What You Need to Know

License plate replacement Nevada at a Smog Busters hut window

Nevada law requires your plates to be clean, legible, and firmly attached to both the front and rear of your vehicle. If your plates are lost, stolen, or too beat up to read, you need a license plate replacement in Nevada before you get cited. Driving on missing or illegible plates is a ticket waiting to happen.

The Nevada DMV handles plate replacements in person at a DMV office. That usually means a half-day at Flamingo, Sahara, or Decatur. At Smog Busters we’re an authorized third-party DMV services provider for plate replacements, so you can file the same paperwork at any of our 32 huts in about 10 minutes. No DMV line, no appointment, no wasted afternoon.

After we submit the paperwork, the DMV prints and ships the new plates back to the same hut where you filed. That’s usually 7 to 10 business days. We call you when they’re ready for pickup.

When to Replace Your Nevada License Plates

  • Stolen. File a police report first, then bring the report number to us. The DMV requires a stolen-plate affidavit and we help you fill it out.
  • Lost. Fell off in a windstorm, came loose on the freeway, or simply vanished. No police report needed for a plain lost plate, just the affidavit.
  • Damaged. Bent, dented, scraped, or cracked after a parking-lot hit or fender bender. Bring the damaged plate in with you.
  • Faded or illegible. Nevada sun is brutal on plate finishes. If the sticker or numbers aren’t readable from a normal distance, replace them before you get cited.
  • Peeling or rusted. Older plates can lose their reflective coating. Same fix: replace them before an officer calls it out.
  • One plate only. If you lost just one plate, Nevada still issues a full set of new matching plates. You can’t keep one and replace the other.

What to Bring for License Plate Replacement in Nevada

Before you head over, gather these. The Nevada DMV rejects altered or illegible documents, so originals only.

  • Your Nevada registration. Current or recently expired is fine. If you don’t have it, we can look you up by VIN.
  • Nevada driver’s license or state ID. Photo ID required for the affidavit.
  • The damaged plate, if you still have it. Bent, cracked, faded, bring whatever is left. We surrender the old plate with the paperwork.
  • Police report number (stolen plates only). File the report first, then come see us with the case number.
  • Payment. Nevada DMV plate replacement fee plus our service fee. Call us for a current quote.

How It Works at the Hut

License plate replacement Nevada process at a Smog Busters hut

Pull up to any Smog Busters hut during business hours. Here’s the flow:

  • Paperwork (about 10 minutes). We fill out the Nevada plate replacement affidavit with you, verify your registration, and collect the DMV fee and our service fee.
  • Surrender the old plate (if you have it). The old plate goes to the DMV with the paperwork.
  • Receipt. You leave with a receipt and a reference number. The DMV processes the order in their system.
  • Pickup (about 7 to 10 business days later). Your new Nevada plates come back to the same hut. We call you when they arrive.
Need them faster? Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days. We offer 2-day and 4-day expedited processing for an additional fee if you need plates sooner. Ask at the hut.

Stolen Plates: Extra Step

Stolen plates are a slightly different path. Before you come to us, file a police report with Las Vegas Metro, Henderson PD, or North Las Vegas PD depending on where the theft happened. You’ll leave the report with a case number.

Bring that case number to us along with your ID and registration. We complete the stolen-plate affidavit with the case number attached. The DMV flags the old plate numbers so they can’t be re-used, then issues you new plates with new numbers. Turnaround is the same 7 to 10 business days.

Why the police report matters: Without a case number, plates are filed as lost, not stolen. If the thief uses your plates to commit a crime later, the stolen flag protects you. Worth the extra stop.

Why Smog Busters Instead of the DMV

The Nevada DMV can replace your plates. They’re just slow about it. You show up at Flamingo, Sahara, or Decatur, take a ticket, wait an hour or two, hand the same paperwork to a state worker, and leave with the same receipt we’d give you.

We file the same paperwork in about 10 minutes. No line, no ticket, no wait. 32 locations across the valley, open Monday through Saturday.

Walk in any day we’re open. No appointment needed. Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Family-owned since 1988. 38 years of license plate replacements filed in Nevada. We know every edge case the state system throws.

Common Questions

License Plate Replacement FAQ

How long does it take to get new Nevada plates?
Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days. Your new plates come back to the same Smog Busters hut where you filed. We call you when they arrive. Expedited 2-day and 4-day options are available for an additional fee.
Do I need a police report for lost plates?
Only if the plates were stolen. For a plain lost plate (fell off, missing without a clear cause), you just sign a lost-plate affidavit at the hut. For stolen plates, file a police report first, then bring the case number to us.
Can I drive without my plates while I wait?
Nevada requires legible plates on the front and rear. If both your plates are missing, talk to us about a temporary moving permit to cover you while the replacements are in process.
Will my new plates have the same numbers?
For lost or damaged plates, usually yes. For stolen plates, the DMV issues new numbers so the stolen set can be flagged. Personalized plates are a separate process; ask us if yours are custom.
I only lost one plate. Do I still have to replace both?
Yes. Nevada issues plates as a matched set. If one is lost, stolen, or damaged, the DMV replaces both so the pair stays matched.
How much does plate replacement cost?
Costs include a Nevada DMV plate replacement fee plus our service fee. Call (702) 436-5346 for a current quote. Expedited processing adds a surcharge.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk into any of our 32 locations Monday through Saturday. Appointments are optional but save $10 on our full DMV service fee.* *$10 analyzer renewals not included in appointment discount.
