Cancel Your Registration and Surrender Plates Before Insurance Ends

Customer holding two Nevada plates beside her car while a Smog Busters technician helps her

Nevada says you must cancel the car’s registration and turn in its plates before you end the insurance. Keep the policy active until both steps are done.

If the insurance ends first, the state may see a lapse. It may then suspend the registration. You could face more work before you can drive again.

Bring the plates to Smog Busters first. We prepare the cancellation paperwork and take it to Nevada DMV. Your registration stays active until the DMV processes the request. The normal turnaround is 7 to 10 business days.

Do not drop the insurance first. Keep it active until Nevada DMV processes the cancellation.

Plate Surrender vs. Plate Transfer

Nevada plates stay with the seller, not the car. Take them off when you sell, trade, give away, or junk a car. The sale does not cancel the registration.

Turn in the plates if you will not use them on another car. If the same owner wants them on a new car, a plate transfer may be the right choice.

Not sure which service fits? Bring the plates and car details. A tech can help you find the right next step.

What to Bring to Surrender Your Nevada Plates

Bring these items to any Smog Busters location:

  • Both Nevada license plates. Bring the front and rear plate from a standard two-plate vehicle.
  • Valid photo ID.
  • Your registration card, if you have it.
  • The VIN and current car details.
  • The current odometer reading. Nevada DMV requires it on the registration-service form.

For a normal plate surrender, you do not need a title, an insurance letter, or a refund form. If a plate is lost or stolen, call us first. The state may need a different form.

How Plate Surrender Works at Smog Busters

Should you cancel insurance or surrender Nevada plates first? Use this order:

  1. Keep your Nevada car insurance active.
  2. Remove both plates from the vehicle.
  3. Bring the plates, photo ID, car details, and current odometer reading to any Smog Busters hut.
  4. A tech takes the plates and prepares the cancellation paperwork.
  5. We take the paperwork to Nevada DMV. Keep your insurance active while the DMV processes it. The normal turnaround is 7 to 10 business days.

Plate surrender is available at every Smog Busters hut. Walk in while we are open. We take your plates and prepare the cancellation paperwork. Our team then brings it to Nevada DMV. Allow 7 to 10 business days for the DMV to process the cancellation. Your registration stays active until then, so keep your insurance active too.

Registration Credits and Limited Refunds

Nevada may give unused registration credit after it cancels the registration. The credit stays in the first owner’s name. It ends on the old registration end date. The owner may use it on another car that meets state rules.

A credit is not a cash refund. Cash refunds are rare. The state asks for a new form and proof that the case meets its rules. Moving out of Nevada does not count by itself.

Credit is not a sure thing. Smog Busters cannot promise a credit, its amount, or a cash refund at the hut.

Plate Surrender FAQ

Should I cancel my insurance before I surrender my Nevada plates?
No. Keep your car insurance active while Nevada DMV processes the cancellation. The registration stays active during the 7 to 10 business-day turnaround.
Can I surrender plates at any Smog Busters location?
Yes. Every Smog Busters hut takes plate surrenders. Walk in while we are open. You do not need a DMV appointment.
What do I need to bring for a Nevada plate surrender?
Bring both Nevada plates, photo ID, your registration card if you have it, the VIN and car details, and the current odometer reading.
When I sell a car in Nevada, do I keep the plates?
Yes. Nevada plates stay with the seller, not the car. Take them off before the sale. Then turn them in or move them to another car.
What is the difference between plate surrender and plate transfer?
Plate surrender ends your use of the plates. A plate transfer moves them to another car in the same owner’s name, if state rules allow it.
Will I get a refund when I surrender my Nevada plates?
Most people do not get cash. Nevada may give unused registration credit. Cash refunds are rare and need a new request with proof.
