Plate Surrender in Las Vegas
Cancel Registration Before You Drop Insurance.
Keep your car insurance active until Nevada DMV cancels the registration. Bring both plates, photo ID, car details, and the current odometer reading to any Smog Busters hut. We prepare the paperwork and take it to the DMV. Processing takes 7 to 10 business days.
Cancel Your Registration and Surrender Plates Before Insurance Ends

Nevada says you must cancel the car’s registration and turn in its plates before you end the insurance. Keep the policy active until both steps are done.
If the insurance ends first, the state may see a lapse. It may then suspend the registration. You could face more work before you can drive again.
Bring the plates to Smog Busters first. We prepare the cancellation paperwork and take it to Nevada DMV. Your registration stays active until the DMV processes the request. The normal turnaround is 7 to 10 business days.
Plate Surrender vs. Plate Transfer
Nevada plates stay with the seller, not the car. Take them off when you sell, trade, give away, or junk a car. The sale does not cancel the registration.
Turn in the plates if you will not use them on another car. If the same owner wants them on a new car, a plate transfer may be the right choice.
What to Bring to Surrender Your Nevada Plates
Bring these items to any Smog Busters location:
- Both Nevada license plates. Bring the front and rear plate from a standard two-plate vehicle.
- Valid photo ID.
- Your registration card, if you have it.
- The VIN and current car details.
- The current odometer reading. Nevada DMV requires it on the registration-service form.
For a normal plate surrender, you do not need a title, an insurance letter, or a refund form. If a plate is lost or stolen, call us first. The state may need a different form.

Registration Credits and Limited Refunds
Nevada may give unused registration credit after it cancels the registration. The credit stays in the first owner’s name. It ends on the old registration end date. The owner may use it on another car that meets state rules.
A credit is not a cash refund. Cash refunds are rare. The state asks for a new form and proof that the case meets its rules. Moving out of Nevada does not count by itself.
