Cancel Your Registration and Surrender Plates Before Insurance Ends
Nevada requires you to cancel your registration and turn in your plates before you cancel your insurance, not after. Keep the policy active until both of those are done.
Cancel the insurance first, and the state can see it as a lapse. That can trigger a registration suspension, which means more work before you’re back on the road.

Plate Surrender vs. Plate Transfer
In Nevada, plates stay with the seller, not the car. Take them off before you sell, trade, give away, or junk a vehicle, since selling the car doesn’t cancel the registration on its own.
If you won’t be using those plates on another vehicle, turn them in. If you’re the same owner and want to move them to a new car instead, a plate transfer may be the better fit.
What to Bring to Surrender Your Nevada Plates
Bring these items to any Smog Busters location:
- Both Nevada license plates. Bring the front and rear plate from a standard two-plate vehicle.
- Valid photo ID.
- Your registration card, if you have it.
- The VIN and current car details.
- The current odometer reading. Nevada DMV requires it on the registration-service form.
For a normal plate surrender, you do not need a title, an insurance letter, or a refund form. If a plate is lost or stolen, call us first. The state may need a different form.

Registration Credits and Limited Refunds
Once Nevada cancels your registration, you may get unused registration credit. It stays in the original owner’s name and expires on the old registration’s end date, and you can apply it to another vehicle as long as that vehicle meets state rules.
That credit isn’t a cash refund, and cash refunds are rare. The state requires a separate form and proof that your situation qualifies. Moving out of Nevada by itself doesn’t meet that bar.
