Desert Pines High School sits at 3800 Harris Ave in east Las Vegas, just south of the North Las Vegas line. When your car is due for its Nevada smog check, Smog Busters Owens & Eastern is a short drive from campus. Three roads connect the two: Harris Avenue, Pecos Road, and Owens Avenue. The hut is in the tire shop lot at 2500 E Owens Ave, across Owens Avenue from McDonald’s and 7-Eleven. If your car doesn’t pass, this hut can also find and fix the emissions problem, so you won’t need a separate repair shop.
Getting There
The Drive From Desert Pines High School to Owens & Eastern
About three in four households around Desert Pines have at least one vehicle, according to Census data for the area. For most of those families, a smog check comes up every year at registration time, and the hut is a short drive from campus. The route uses three streets: Harris Avenue, Pecos Road, and Owens Avenue. Open the driving-directions link on your phone, or follow these steps:

Head west on Harris Avenue from the school area.
2Where Harris ends, turn right onto Pecos Road.
3Turn left onto Owens Avenue and stay on it heading west.
4Before you reach Eastern Avenue, turn right into the tire shop lot at 2500 E Owens Ave.
5The hut is in that lot, across Owens from McDonald’s and 7-Eleven.
The lot is easy to get into from Owens Avenue in either direction, and you can also come up Eastern Avenue.
After the Test
A Smog Check First, Then Repair Help if Your Car Does Not Pass
At this stop, the smog check always comes first, before any repair work begins. Owens & Eastern is one of four Smog Busters locations that hold a 2G certification. That certification matters when a car runs into trouble. A 2G hut can test your car first. Then, if it does not pass, the same hut can diagnose and repair the smog-related problem that caused the result. Because of that, you do not have to drive somewhere else to fix an emissions issue after the test.
This is not general mechanical repair, so it helps to know the limit before you come. The work covers the emissions fault that kept the car from passing, not unrelated engine or maintenance jobs. No one can tell you how the test will go before it runs, which is why the test is always the first step. Diesel vehicles are not tested here, so Smog Busters sends diesel testing to its E Sahara & Atlantic location instead.
Your Visit
What to Expect When You Pull Up to the Owens & Eastern Hut
The hut tests gasoline-powered and gas-electric hybrid vehicles. It is closed on Sunday, so it helps to plan your trip around that. Open hours run Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. You do not need an appointment for a smog check, so you can come during any of those open hours. When you arrive, pull into the tire shop lot and up to the hut, where a technician handles the test.
Registration
Renewing Your Registration After a Passing Test
If your car passes, you can renew your Nevada registration right here, on the spot. You do not need your renewal notice with you, because the staff can find your vehicle by its VIN. The Nevada DMV then mails your registration sticker to the address on file. The hut does not hand you the sticker that day. This way, you handle both the test and the renewal in one stop instead of making a separate trip to the DMV.
Nevada Rules
How Often Nevada Requires a Smog Check
Not sure whether your car is due? The Nevada DMV requires a yearly smog check for most cars registered in urban Clark County. A few vehicles are exempt from that rule. New vehicles are exempt for their first three registrations, and qualifying hybrids are exempt for five model years. Cars from model year 1967 and older are exempt as well. If your renewal notice says a smog check is due, pull up to the hut and get it done. No appointment needed.
