Nellis and Northeast Las Vegas
Nellis AFB Puts a Lot of Cars on Northeast Las Vegas Roads
Nellis started as the Las Vegas Army Air Field. It grew with the city and became a major center for advanced combat aviation training. It is home to the Thunderbirds and Red Flag. That training exercise brings aircrews to Las Vegas from around the world.
All that activity means a lot of driving. Many people assigned to Nellis come from other states, and some choose to register their cars in Nevada.
Whether your car came from across the country or across town, it may need to pass a smog check before its next Nevada registration. The Las Vegas Blvd N hut is a short drive from the base for military and civilian drivers alike.
Military Registration Rules
Out-of-State Plates and Nevada Smog Checks
If you are on active duty and your legal home is in another state, the Nevada DMV does not require you to register your car here. You may keep your home-state plates. The same rule covers a spouse who lives in Nevada only to be with you.
If you choose Nevada registration, covered vehicles based in the Las Vegas area need a passing smog check. Nevada law ties that proof of compliance to registration or reregistration.
Keeping your home-state plates? Follow your home state’s emissions rules. Each state handles vehicles stationed elsewhere differently.

Smog-Related Follow-Up
Help After a Failed Smog Check
If your car does not pass, you do not have to start over somewhere else. The North Las Vegas Boulevard hut is a 2G station, so it can test your car and also diagnose and repair smog-related problems. The technician can walk you through your results and the repair options at this location.
It is not a general repair shop, though. Brakes, tires, and other mechanical work still need a full-service mechanic.
Your Visit
Fitting a Smog Check Around Your Schedule
The hut is open Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 6 PM and Saturday from 8 AM to 4 PM, so a day off works as well as a weekday. It’s closed on Sunday. This hut tests gasoline vehicles only, so diesel drivers need the E Sahara and Atlantic location, the only one that tests them.
You don’t need an appointment, so just pull up and a technician will take it from there. Most smog checks take 15 minutes or less, though it can run longer when the shop is busy.
Once your car passes, the result goes straight to the Nevada DMV. If your Nevada registration is due, you can renew it on the spot. You don’t need your renewal notice, because the shop looks up your car by its VIN. The DMV then mails your sticker to the address on file.
