Your Complete Guide to Emissions Testing in Las Vegas

If you live in Las Vegas or anywhere in Clark County, getting your vehicle smogged is just part of the deal when it comes to keeping your registration current. But we know emissions testing can feel a bit mysterious if you’ve never been through it before. That’s why we’ve put together this guide to help you understand what’s required, why it matters, and how to make your visit as smooth as possible.

Why Does Nevada Require Emissions Testing?

Nevada’s emissions testing program exists to keep our air clean and protect public health. With hundreds of thousands of vehicles on Las Vegas roads every day, vehicle emissions can significantly impact air quality. The testing program helps ensure that cars and trucks meet environmental standards and aren’t releasing excessive pollutants into the air we all breathe.

While it might seem like one more thing on your to-do list, emissions testing also benefits you directly. A vehicle that passes its smog check is running efficiently, which means better fuel economy and fewer expensive repairs down the road.

Which Vehicles Need Emissions Testing?

You Need Testing If:

  • You live in Clark or Washoe County: Including the Las Vegas and Reno/Sparks areas.
  • Vehicle is 1968 or newer: Classic vehicles 1967 and older are exempt.
  • Past first three registrations: Brand new vehicles get a 3-cycle break.
  • Gasoline-powered: Any weight class.
  • Diesel up to 14,000 lbs: Light-duty diesel requires annual testing.

You’re Exempt If:

  • Brand new vehicles (first 3 registrations)
  • New hybrids (first 5 model years)
  • Electric vehicles (all years)
  • Motorcycles, mopeds, or tri-mobiles
  • Diesel over 14,000 lbs
  • Classic Rods (driven < 5,000 miles/year)

Understanding the Two Types of Tests

For 1996 and Newer: OBD-II Testing

The technician connects a diagnostic scanner to your vehicle’s computer system through the OBD-II port. Important: If you’ve recently had battery work or major repairs, drive your vehicle for at least a week before testing to allow the computer system to reset properly.

For 1995 and Older: Two-Speed Idle Test

Technicians use a tailpipe probe to measure emissions at idle and at 2,500 RPM. For these older vehicles, a warm engine provides the most accurate results, so it’s best to test after you’ve been driving for a while.

Special Note for Diesel Vehicles

Only our corporate office at 2711 E. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89104 handles diesel vehicle testing (up to 14,000 lbs).

What Our Technicians Can and Can’t Do

Our technicians are “1G rated” by the Nevada DMV. This means they are legally authorized to test your vehicle for registration purposes only. They cannot perform repairs or tell you how to make your vehicle pass.

We don’t “pass” or “fail” your carโ€”the emissions analyzer (regulated by the DMV) performs the test and determines the result. If your vehicle fails, we’ll provide the paperwork and info you need to proceed with a 2G repair facility.

No. For vehicles made in 1996 or newer, you must wait at least one week after battery work or disconnection. The OBD-II system needs time to complete its self-checks. Testing too soon will result in a failed smog check.

Vehicles made in 1996 or newer receive an OBD-II test where a scanner connects to the vehicle’s computer system. Vehicles made in 1995 or earlier receive a two-speed idle test where a probe measures tailpipe emissions at idle and at 2,500 RPM.
Yes, all 30+ Smog Busters locations handle heavy-duty vehicle testing. However, diesel vehicle testing is only available at our corporate office located at 2711 E. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89104.
No problem! If you forget your registration renewal notice, we can find your information in the system using your vehicle’s VIN. We just need to match at least two identifiers on your vehicle to locate your registration information.
If your vehicle fails, we’ll provide you with information on how to proceed. You’ll need to have repairs completed at a licensed 2G facility and then return for a retest. Our technicians are 1G-rated, meaning they can test but cannot diagnose or repair vehicles.
