If your license plates are lost or stolen, you must report them and get replacements. Driving without plates is illegal, and unreported stolen plates can be used for illegal activities. We process replacement plates and file the necessary reports with Nevada DMV.
Faded, bent, cracked, or illegible license plates should be replaced. Nevada law requires plates to be clearly visible and readable. If law enforcement can't read your plate, you can be cited.
Nevada requires both front and rear license plates. If you're missing your front plate (common for out-of-state transfers or lost plates), we can order a replacement front plate.
Lost or damaged personalized plates can be replaced. You'll keep your same custom plate number - we order a replacement with your existing vanity plate text.
Military, organizational, university, or other specialty plates can be replaced. Bring documentation showing your eligibility for the specialty plate type.

No. Nevada law requires visible front and rear license plates at all times. Driving without plates can result in traffic citations and fines.
Step 4: Official Temporary Documentation
If issued, keep your official Nevada temporary moving permit prominently displayed in the lower left of your front windshield. This is the only valid documentation while your permanent replacement plates are being processed.
No. Plates must be assigned to the specific vehicle's registration. Using plates from another vehicle is illegal.
Nevada requires license plates on both the front and rear of most vehicles.
Missing your front plate? If you moved from a state that doesn't require front plates (Arizona, Florida, etc.), or you lost your front plate, visit Smog Busters to order a replacement front plate. You can be cited for driving without a front plate in Nevada.
Your custom plate text is registered to your vehicle. When ordering replacement personalized plates, you keep the same custom text - we just order new physical plates with your existing vanity plate message.
Replacement orders use your existing custom text. To change your vanity plate message, you must apply for a new personalized plate (separate process and fees). Contact Smog Busters for information on ordering different personalized plates.
Nevada offers various specialty plates for military, universities, organizations, and causes. If you lose or damage specialty plates, you can order replacements:
Bring military ID or DD-214 showing your eligibility for military plates. We order replacement plates matching your existing military designation.
UNLV, UNR, and other university plates can be replaced. No additional proof needed if you already have registered university plates.
Bring proof of membership or eligibility for organizational plates (firefighter, law enforcement, professional organizations, etc.).
Standard replacement plates arrive by mail in 2-3 weeks. Personalized and specialty plates take 4-6 weeks. You'll receive temporary documentation to use while waiting.
No. Nevada DMV manufactures all license plates centrally and mails them to your address. Smog Busters processes your order and provides temporary documentation, but physical plates come from Nevada DMV by mail.
If replacement plates don't arrive within 4 weeks (or 8 weeks for personalized plates), contact Smog Busters or Nevada DMV to check order status.
Not necessarily. Plate replacement and registration renewal are separate. However, if your registration is expired or expiring soon, we can handle renewal during the same visit. Learn about registration renewal.
