Interstate Travel
Where Is a Standard Nevada Moving Permit Valid?
A standard Nevada moving permit is valid for travel within Nevada only. Do not use it to cross a state line.
The Nevada DMV lists the drive-away permit as a separate permit for certain one-way trips outside the state. A standard permit does not become valid for interstate travel just because it has not expired.
Nevada law and the DMV permit guide serve different purposes. NRS 482.396 lets the DMV issue permits for certain unregistered vehicles. The DMV then sets the current permit types and travel limits. The law does not say that a standard moving permit is valid in another state.
For driving within Nevada, Smog Busters issues qualifying Temporary Moving Permits on site. The vehicle, records, and transaction must qualify.

What Is a Nevada Drive-Away Permit?
A Nevada drive-away permit is for one trip to a named place outside Nevada. It lasts up to 30 days. It is not a standard permit with extra travel rights.
Nevada uses this permit in two narrow cases:
- A vehicle is being moved so it can be sold outside Nevada.
- A person who does not live in Nevada bought the vehicle in Nevada and is moving it out of the state.
These rules come from NRS 482.3955. They do not mean every Nevada resident can use a drive-away permit when moving to another state. The buyer, the sale, the vehicle, and the purpose of the trip all matter.
The Nevada DMV describes the permit as valid for one trip to a specific destination. The law says the permit expires 30 days after it is issued. That 30-day end date does not turn it into a pass for open-ended travel.

Round-Trip Limits
Can You Use a Drive-Away Permit for a Round Trip?
No. A Nevada drive-away permit is for a one-way trip to the destination shown on the permit. It is not meant for a round trip.
Do not use it for errands, repeat trips, or a return drive to Nevada. The permit is tied to the reason it was issued and the named destination.
A drive-away permit is not vehicle registration. It does not register the vehicle in the state where you plan to live, keep it, or sell it. Check with that state's motor vehicle agency to find out what happens after you arrive.
Another state may review the permit under its own laws. Nevada cannot guarantee that another state will accept a permit that is being used outside its terms. Confirm the rules before you cross the state line.
Before You Leave
What Should You Check Before Leaving Nevada?
Check the permit type, destination, dates, ownership papers, insurance, and the other states' rules before you leave Nevada.
Use this list:
- Read the permit name. Make sure it is a drive-away permit, not a standard Nevada moving permit.
- Check the destination. It should match the one-way trip you plan to make.
- Check the dates. Do not drive outside the dates shown.
- Carry proof of ownership or purchase. The exact papers depend on the vehicle and sale.
- Keep current proof of liability insurance in the vehicle.
- Ask the destination state what it requires after you arrive.
- Check the rules for every state you will drive through.
Do not guess if the vehicle record is unclear. A missing title, a name that does not match, a lien, or an unfinished sale may change what you need.
If your trip will stay inside Nevada, Smog Busters can review your papers and issue a qualifying Temporary Moving Permit on site. For an out-of-state trip, first confirm that you qualify for the separate drive-away permit and that your route and destination will accept it.
Use The Right Permit
Use the Permit That Matches the Trip
A standard Nevada moving permit is for driving inside Nevada. A drive-away permit is a different permit with a narrow one-way purpose. Confirm the permit, route, and destination rules before you leave.
