Transfer Your Nevada Plates
Keep Your Plates, New Vehicle.
Selling one car and buying another? You don’t have to turn in your old plates and buy new ones. Nevada lets you transfer your existing license plates from one vehicle to another. Walk into any of our 32 Smog Busters huts with the registration for both vehicles, we file the paperwork in about 15 minutes, and your plates move to the new car. The updated registration and plates come back to the hut for pickup.
What a Nevada Plate Transfer Is

A plate transfer moves your current Nevada license plates from one vehicle to another. Instead of surrendering your old plates when you sell a car and buying brand-new plates for the replacement vehicle, you keep the same plate number and move it to the new one.
This is common when you trade in a vehicle at a dealership, sell a car privately and buy another, or add a new vehicle and retire an old one. Nevada allows the transfer as long as both vehicles are registered in your name (or will be) and the plates are in good condition.
Smog Busters is an authorized Nevada DMV agent. We file the same plate transfer paperwork the DMV does, through the same state system, but you walk in and out in about 15 minutes instead of spending a morning at a DMV office.
When You Need a Plate Transfer
- Bought a new car, selling the old one. Transfer your plates to the new vehicle instead of buying new ones.
- Trading in at a dealership. Some dealers handle the plate transfer for you. If yours didn’t, bring both registrations to any hut.
- Swapping vehicles within a household. Moving plates between two vehicles you own? Same process.
- Keeping a personalized or specialty plate. If you have personalized or specialty plates, you can transfer them to a new vehicle as long as the plate type is compatible with the new vehicle class.
What to Bring
Have these ready before you head to the hut:
- Your Nevada driver’s license or state ID. Photo ID is required.
- Registration for the vehicle the plates are currently on. This shows the plates are yours and in good standing.
- Registration or title for the vehicle receiving the plates. Proof you own (or are buying) the new vehicle.
- The plates themselves, if they are not already on the new vehicle. We need to verify condition and plate number.
- Current smog check on the receiving vehicle, if required. Some vehicles need a passing smog before registration transfers. If yours does, we can run the smog and file the transfer in the same visit.
- Payment for DMV fees and our service fee. Call us for a current quote.
How It Works at the Hut

Pull up to any Smog Busters hut during business hours. Here’s the flow:
- Verify documents (a couple of minutes). We check registrations, titles, and ID to make sure everything lines up for the transfer.
- Paperwork (about 15 minutes). We fill out the plate transfer forms, confirm vehicle information, and collect fees.
- Smog check (if needed). If the receiving vehicle requires a smog test, we run it on-site before submitting the transfer.
- Submission. Our DMV team submits your paperwork to the Nevada DMV through our authorized agent channel.
- Pickup. The plates and updated registration come back to the same hut where you filed, typically in 7 to 10 business days. We call you when they are ready.
Plate Transfer vs New Plates
Not sure whether to transfer your plates or just get new ones? Here’s the difference:
- Plate transfer keeps your existing plate number. Good if you like your plate number, have a personalized plate, or just don’t want to wait for new plates to be manufactured.
- New plates mean surrendering the old ones and getting a fresh set from the DMV. Takes longer because Nevada has to manufacture or pull new plates.
- Either way, we can handle it. If your old plates are too damaged to transfer, we will let you know and file for replacement plates instead.
