What a Duplicate Title Is in Nevada

Nevada driver filing for a duplicate title at a Smog Busters hut in Las Vegas

A duplicate title in Nevada is a legally valid replacement for your original vehicle title. The Nevada DMV issues it when the original is lost, stolen, destroyed, or badly damaged. If you need a lost title replacement, a duplicate title is the official process. Once the new one prints, the old title is voided in the state system so it can’t be used to transfer the vehicle by anyone who finds it later.

Duplicate titles can be filed at a DMV office or through an authorized third-party DMV services provider. Smog Busters has been helping Nevada drivers with title services for 38 years, and you can walk into any of our 32 huts to file the same paperwork the DMV would. No half-day wait at Flamingo or Decatur, no ticket number.

After we submit, the Nevada DMV processes and prints the new title, then mails it directly to the address on your vehicle record. Standard turnaround is up to 60 days. Expedited processing is available and typically takes 2-3 weeks. Make sure your mailing address is current before you file. If you have moved recently, we can update it at the same visit.

When You Need a Duplicate Title in Nevada

Whether you call it a lost title replacement, a damaged title replacement, or a duplicate title, the process is the same. Here are the most common reasons Nevada drivers file for a duplicate:

  • Lost title. Moved houses, cleaned a desk, cleaned out a parent’s paperwork. The original title is just gone.
  • Stolen title. Broken into vehicle or home and the title was in a document folder. File a police report first, then come see us.
  • Destroyed title. Fire, flood, torn, soaked. Anything that makes the original unreadable.
  • Damaged or illegible title. Stamps and signatures need to be readable. If the title is mangled to the point a buyer or lienholder won’t accept it, you need a duplicate.
  • After a lien payoff. Your lender should mail the original to you. If it never arrived or got lost in the mail, we file the duplicate in your name.
  • Name change or address update needed. When you request the duplicate, you can correct name or address information at the same time.

What to Bring for a Duplicate Title

Nevada is strict about duplicate titles because the title is a transferable ownership document. The registered owner must be present in person to sign the duplicate title affidavit. Here’s what you need:

  • The registered owner in person. Every owner listed on the title has to be physically present to sign the duplicate title affidavit at the hut. Smog Busters does not accept power of attorney in place of the owner for duplicate titles.
  • Nevada driver’s license or state ID. Photo ID is required to sign the duplicate title affidavit.
  • Current or recent Nevada registration, if you have it. Helps us pull the record fast. Not required if you don’t, we can look up the vehicle by VIN.
  • Lien release paperwork, if applicable. If a loan was recently paid off, bring the lienholder’s release letter so the duplicate prints in your name alone.
  • Police report number, for stolen titles. File the report first. Bring the case number with you.
  • Payment for DMV fees and our service fee. Call us for a current quote.

How the Duplicate Title Process Works at the Hut

Pull up to any Smog Busters hut during business hours. Here’s the flow:

  • Paperwork (about 15 minutes). We fill out the duplicate title affidavit with you, confirm VIN and owner information, and verify photo ID. You sign in front of us.
  • Payment. DMV fees plus our service fee. We explain the breakdown before you pay.
  • Submission. Our DMV team submits your paperwork to the Nevada DMV through our authorized channel.
  • Mail delivery. The Nevada DMV processes, prints, and mails your new title directly to the address on your vehicle record. Standard turnaround is up to 60 days. Expedited processing is available and typically takes 2-3 weeks.
Need the title faster? Standard DMV turnaround runs up to 60 days. We offer expedited processing that typically takes 2-3 weeks for an additional fee. Ask at the hut if you have a closing or a sale on a short deadline.

Special Situations for Duplicate Titles

Most duplicate title filings are routine. A few situations take extra paperwork.

  • Co-owned vehicles. Every owner listed on the title has to come in person and sign the duplicate title affidavit. Smog Busters does not accept power of attorney in place of a missing owner for duplicate title filings. If an owner can’t come in, the filing has to wait until they can.
  • Estate or probate vehicles. If the registered owner has passed away, we need certified letters of administration or the probate court order showing who controls the vehicle. Ask us, we’ll walk you through it.
  • Out-of-state lienholder. If the loan was through an out-of-state bank, the process can take a few extra days because Nevada DMV verifies the lien release with the original issuing state.
  • Name change since the original was issued. Bring marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order documenting the legal name change. We update the title at the same visit.

Why Smog Busters Instead of the DMV

The Nevada DMV can file your duplicate title. They’re just slow. You pull a ticket, wait an hour or two, hand the same paperwork to a state worker, and leave with the same receipt we’d give you.

We handle the same filing in about 15 minutes. No line, no ticket, no wait. 32 locations across the valley. As an authorized third-party DMV services provider, we submit the same forms to the same system.

Walk in any day we’re open. No appointment needed. Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm.

Family-owned since 1988. 38 years and thousands of Nevada title filings. We know every edge case, from lien releases to probate vehicles to surviving spouse transfers.

Other DMV Services While You’re Here

Handling the duplicate title usually comes with other DMV work. We can do most of it the same visit:

Check your mailing address before you file. The Nevada DMV prints and mails the new title to the address on your vehicle record. If you’ve moved recently and haven’t updated your address, your new title could land at your old house. We’ll update the address at the same visit if you let us know.

Duplicate Title FAQ

How long does a Nevada duplicate title take?
Standard DMV turnaround is up to 60 days. The Nevada DMV prints and mails your new title directly to the address on your vehicle record. Expedited processing is available and typically takes 2-3 weeks.
Does every owner on the title have to come in person?
Yes. Every registered owner listed on the title has to be physically present at the hut to sign the duplicate title affidavit. Smog Busters does not accept power of attorney in place of an owner for duplicate titles. If a co-owner can’t come, the filing has to wait until they can.
Do I need a police report for a lost title?
Only if the title was stolen. For a plain lost title, you just sign an affidavit. For a stolen title, file a police report first, then bring the case number to us.
Can I get a duplicate title if there’s a lien on the car?
Usually the lienholder holds the title until the loan is paid off. If the lien is still active, the duplicate goes to the lienholder, not to you. If the lien was just released and the original never arrived or got lost, we file the duplicate in your name with the lien release paperwork.
How much does a Nevada duplicate title cost?
Costs include a Nevada DMV duplicate title fee plus our service fee. Call (702) 436-5346 for a current quote. Expedited processing adds a surcharge.
Will my duplicate title be mailed to my home?
Yes. The Nevada DMV prints and mails the new title directly to the address on your vehicle record. Make sure your mailing address is current before you file. If you have moved, let us know at the visit and we update it at the same time.
Do I need an appointment?
No. Walk into any of our 32 locations Monday through Saturday. Appointments are optional but save $10 on our full DMV service fee.* *$10 analyzer renewals not included in appointment discount.
What is the difference between a duplicate title and a lost title replacement?
They are the same thing. A duplicate title is the official Nevada term for a lost title replacement. Whether your title was lost, stolen, damaged, or destroyed, you file for a duplicate title through the Nevada DMV or an authorized third-party DMV services provider like Smog Busters.
