What a VIN Inspection in Nevada Is

VIN inspection Nevada at a Smog Busters hut in Las Vegas

A VIN inspection in Nevada is a physical verification of the vehicle identification number on your car, truck, or van. Every vehicle manufactured for sale in the United States has a unique 17-character VIN stamped on a metal plate. You can usually find it on the dashboard near the windshield, on the driver-side doorjamb, or on the vehicle’s title and registration documents.

During a VIN inspection, a certified inspector walks out to your vehicle and visually confirms that the VIN plate on the vehicle matches the VIN on the paperwork. The inspector checks for signs of tampering, damage, or alteration. This is not a mechanical inspection or a smog test. It is a simple visual check of the identification number itself.

The Nevada DMV requires VIN inspections for specific situations where the state needs to confirm a vehicle’s identity before issuing or transferring a title. If the DMV tells you that you need a VIN inspection, Smog Busters can handle it at any of our 32 locations.

When You Need a VIN Inspection in Nevada

Not every DMV transaction requires a VIN inspection. Here are the most common reasons Nevada asks for one:

  • Salvage or rebuilt title. If you bought a vehicle with a salvage title and want to get it road-legal with a rebuilt title, a VIN inspection is part of the process. Salvage and rebuilt title VIN inspections are handled at our E Sahara location (2711 E Sahara Ave).
  • Out-of-state registration with a VIN issue. Moving to Nevada and the VIN on your out-of-state title doesn’t match the vehicle, or the state format is different? The DMV may require a VIN inspection before they register it here.
  • Homemade or kit vehicles. Built a vehicle from a kit or assembled it yourself? Nevada needs to verify the VIN before issuing a title.
  • VIN discrepancy. If there is a mismatch between the VIN on the vehicle and the VIN on the paperwork, the DMV will flag it and require an inspection.
  • Law enforcement or DMV request. In some cases, the DMV or law enforcement may request a VIN verification as part of a title investigation or ownership dispute.

What to Bring for Your VIN Inspection

Have these ready before you head to your nearest Smog Busters location:

  • Your Nevada driver’s license or state ID. Photo ID is required.
  • The vehicle. This is not a paperwork-only service. The vehicle must be physically present so the inspector can check the VIN plate.
  • Vehicle title or DMV paperwork showing the VIN. Bring the title, bill of sale, or any DMV correspondence that lists the VIN.
  • Current registration (if the vehicle has one). If the vehicle is already registered in another state, bring that registration.
  • Any DMV correspondence requesting the inspection. If the DMV sent you a letter or notice requiring a VIN inspection, bring it.
  • Payment for the inspection fee and any additional services. Call us for a current quote.
The vehicle must be at the location. Unlike most of our DMV services, a VIN inspection cannot be done with paperwork alone. You need to drive, tow, or trailer the vehicle to your nearest Smog Busters hut.

How the VIN Inspection Process Works

Certified inspector performing a VIN inspection in Nevada at Smog Busters

Here is what happens when you bring your vehicle in for a VIN inspection:

  • Pull up to the hut. Drive your vehicle to any of our 32 Smog Busters locations. If the vehicle is not drivable, it can be towed or trailered.
  • Inspector checks the VIN plate. Our certified inspector walks out to your vehicle and locates the VIN plate, usually on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver-side doorjamb. The inspector compares the physical VIN to the number on your paperwork.
  • Verification and documentation. The inspector confirms the VIN matches, checks for signs of tampering, and completes the required inspection form.
  • Paperwork submitted to the DMV. We submit the completed VIN inspection form along with any related paperwork (salvage title application, registration, etc.) to the Nevada DMV through our authorized third-party DMV services provider channel.
  • Processing. Most VIN inspection paperwork processes in 7 to 10 business days. Expedited options are available if you need it faster. We call you when everything is ready.

VIN Inspection for Salvage and Rebuilt Titles

The most common reason people come in for a VIN inspection is as part of the salvage-to-rebuilt title process. If you bought a vehicle at auction or from a private seller with a salvage title, Nevada requires several steps before that vehicle can be driven on public roads.

A VIN inspection is one of those steps. The state needs to confirm that the vehicle sitting in front of the inspector is the same vehicle described on the salvage title. This helps prevent stolen vehicles from being re-titled.

Salvage and rebuilt title VIN inspections are handled at our E Sahara location only. Bring the vehicle to 2711 E Sahara Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89104. This location handles the VIN inspection, rebuilt title paperwork, and smog check all in one visit.

If the vehicle also needs a smog check (and most do), we run the emissions test on-site as well. One visit, multiple steps handled.

Salvage-titled vehicles cannot be driven on public roads. If your vehicle currently has a salvage title, it is not street-legal. You may need a temporary moving permit to get the vehicle to the E Sahara location, or you can tow or trailer it.
